Sometimes I burn a couple of DVDs too many. Mostly they are sold over time, sometimes they are not.

It is now time to go and sell those DVDs at a down-low price of only $5 including shipping and handling. Note: this low-low price is only valid as long as inventory lasts. After that inventory is gone, you can still order those DVDs, but then at the "regular" price of $10 per disc (DVDs more than 1 year after first production).

Casey's School Memories

The DVD includes recordings from "Mock Symposium 2009".
The main feature video is 9 minutes, 59.8 seconds (the edict was for it to be less than 10 minutes) and while the audio is obviously completely in French, it has subtitles in French, English and even Dutch. There is also a blooper reel with 10 of the countless funny moments during the recording of this video.

The joy of having kids AND a video/DVD hobby, is that sometimes you get a chance to help your kid create a DVD for a school project.
This time Debby had a group project for French where she wanted to present a DVD with Pigloo video clips. The challenge (for me) was that she wanted the songs to be subtitled with the French lyrics (with the ability to switch the subtitles on and off). I knew my DVD authoring software could do this, I just had never done it. So, apart from the main menu with song selection, I created a sub menu offering a choice between French subtitles and none. Debby provided me with the flat lyrics, and I synced them with the songs.

Anime Matsuri 2008 - Impressions from a Con

Using my new Sony HDR-SR12 camcorder (and to get familiar with it), I have been recording about 6 hours of footage from the Anime Matsuri 2008 anime convention in the Waterway Marriott in the Woodlands, TX.

In order to also get experience in editing hi-definition video, I have decided to actually make a DVD of this event. The DVD will contain a 15 to 20 minute overview section, and a complete recording of the Vic Mignogna (celebrity anime voice actor, best known for his dub role of Edward Elric in Fullmetal Alchemist) panel session. There might be other outtakes that will be added as separate sections to the DVD.

For people who are interested in anime (conventions) and for those that want to see actual DVD end results of HDR-SR12 video recordings, I will be offering this DVD for sale (at a reduced price of only $7.50 per DVD including shipping and handling).

No, this is not a new DVD, but an introduction of my new video equipment.
After looking around for almost 18 months, I had decided on my next camcorder (Sony HDR-SR8) in September 2007. I would start shipping in October, then November, then December. And then the rumors started on a newer model, addressing some of the shortcomings in the earlier model. So, I decided to wait a bit more (the December tapings were done anyway).
The newer model (Sony HDR-SR12) was announced at the big Consumer Electronics Show in January 2008 and would start shipping in March. And this time they kept their promise. I ordered it on March 14 and it was delivered on March 19.

Why a new camera and what's in it for you?

The new camera has a lot of advantages, most are for me, the operator, but a few are significant for the event organizers and the buyers of my DVDs.

NO MORE TAPES - NO MORE MANDATORY BREAKS
The new camcorder uses a 120-GB hard disk instead of tapes. The biggest advantage of that is that there no longer is the mandatory break after 1 hour to change tapes (or missing part of a song/performance if the break doesn't happen). Even at the highest quality setting the hard disk will enable me to record up to 15 hours non-stop.
Another advantage is that tapes every now and then will have short drop-outs. Typically these drop-outs are just 1/30th of a second and I can simply cut out a single frame to solve the problem. It means some work for me, and is unnoticeable for you, but with the hard disk technology the risk of dropouts is near zero.

HIGH DEFINITION
The new camera records 1920x1080 pixels (widescreen). A DVD only needs 720x480 pixels. While I will normally compress the total recorded image down to the DVD format, this means that I can occasionally "zoom" in on the recorded image at editing time, if I "failed" to zoom in while recording. It gives me a more than 5x "extra" zoom while editing without loss of quality.
Also, the new technology will allow me to start offering Blu-Ray high-definition DVDs as soon as customers start to ask for them. Based on prices for blank media today, I would have to charge $35 for a Blu-Ray version of my DVDs. I'm not expecting much demand for that. But, now that the war between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray DVD has been settled, those prices may start to come down as the market volume increases. I will keep you posted on this, but please use the comment button below this post, to let me know about your desire to have Blu-Ray versions.

There are a lot of other advantages to the new camera, but I'll leave it at this for now.

I have 6 or 7 weeks before the scheduled May recordings start, so during this time I will work on familiarizing myself with the camera and trying to get some opportunity to test record in similar settings (high-dynamic sounds and limited-spotlight-lit stages) to find the best settings for each. The result of all that should be that your May 2008 DVDs are even better than the previous ones.
